Process Paper
Throughout the years, slavery was one of the main subjects that was most talked about. I was aware of a few things about slavery, but I wanted to know more. I started researching the subject and came across the invention of the cotton gin and its huge impact on slavery. I was intrigued by the information that I found. From then on, I continued researching and finding more information and decided to make it my NHD project.
I began my research on the internet. I started by looking up information about the invention of the cotton gin. I soon found how the cotton gin works, how it was built, and how invented. Since keeping up with all the information was becoming difficult, I began taking notes on each individual website, book, and document. I later narrowed the information and only used the material I needed for my project. Luckily, the topic I chose on the cotton gin had many primary sources that were available such as documents and stories from actual slaves. To make the process less difficult, I also kept up with my annotated bibliography so it wasn't left for the very end. After I had gathered my information, I organized into certain categories. The edited information was then published on my project website.
To display my project, I created a website. In our generation, technology is a huge part of our lives. Putting the information on a website was convenient and anyone could view it with a click of a button. After selecting my project category, I began talking the information from my notes and transferring it onto my website. The website contained several tabs, one for each topic. I also added pictures and official documents to the website to bring it all together. The website contained a separate tap for the annotated bibliography.
The invention of the cotton gin was definitely a turning point in American History. My project relates to the theme is several ways. Before the cotton gin, cotton was not seen a profitable cash crop. The invention of the cotton gin turned cotton into a profitable cash crop and helped improve the South’s economy. Before the cotton gin was invented, slaves were becoming too expensive for everyone to have; therefore, the use of slaves was gradually decreasing since many couldn't afford them. Unfortunately, the invention of the cotton gin increased and prolonged the use of slaves in the United States. The cotton gin, known as an “economic triumph” for some, heavily impacted the lives of slaves in America for years to come.
