Black codes were established to keep freed blacks from activity and ensue their labor status as slaves.

Slave Conditions
Many slaves were abused, especially women. They were punished and beaten for not working efficiently, arriving late to work, and denying authority. Slaves who broke the rules, were whipped, sold, tortured, or imprisoned.
